The IUPAT membership extends beyond far beyond the workplace, however. Recognized as one of the most active unions in the labor movement, IUPAT members help shape their communities in many ways: through an abiding commitment to service, by fighting passionately for workers’ rights that benefit all working families, and through effective and aggressive political mobilization.

It was a day of celebration for the members of Painters Local 57. A time for good food and great fellowship amongst brothers and sisters celebrating the success of 2011's STAR Program. Not only did Thomas Long, receive apprentice of the year for local 57, but represents us proudly as District Council 77's Apprentice of the Year as well. A well deserved and proud moment for both Thomas and Painters Local 57.
Our local was filled with winners. Brad Fiefer presented our 50/50 Patch winner, Jason Mahannah with a $195.00 win. Reggie Clements was the winner of a GPS Navigation System; $250.00 recipients were William Long; Frank Watson; Jason Mahannah; Luther Carlisle (location) and Thomas Long. It was a great day for Birmingham and all who attended were winners for having another SAFE year. Congratulations members!
In memory of Martin Luther King, Jr's assassination anniversary, a nationwide WE ARE ONE rally took place. Representing Birmingham Alabama were union members of our local that stood in unity along side members of unions statewide. Showing solidarity and support were members William Robinson, Albert Walker, Gordon Boyd and Randall Jackson and Business Representative Fred Ward. Showing brotherhood support was Sean O'Donnell instructor for the insulators local union also in Birmingham. Close to 800 were in attendance and as the chanting increased, the energy was strong and speakers brought forth fighting messages for the Rights of working families. We stand strong believing in our democracy and the strength in numbers and the unions we represent. The rally concluded with all members joining hands and singing in harmony, We Shall Overcome in reverance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the stand he took in the name of equality and justice for all.
